Being only a 90 minute drive from Christchurch it is a popular destination for families and travellers alike. Hanmer Springs offers a wide selection of both relaxation and adventure activities. Unfortunately, as everyone knows, there is very little time for relaxation when on holiday with children! So here are our top picks for keeping the little ones entertained without breaking the budget.
Play A Round Of Mini Golf
There are two main options for playing a fun round of mini golf with the family in Hanmer Springs. The first is situated on Conical Hill Road, Alpine Crazy Putt is conveniently centrally located and the course is relatively new. The theme of the course takes an historic Canterbury approach with holes named and modelled on distinctive local features like the Thermal Pools and Hanmer Forest.
The second is A-Maz-N-Golf situated on the main road as you enter Hanmer Springs, just a 5 minute walk from the village centre. This course follows a Gold Rush theme and has 18 holes. It is very popular with children and adults alike with elaborate displays and the added option of solving the ‘Mystery of the Lost Temple’ by finding the clues along the way.
Take A Bike Ride
A fun way to take a sightseeing tour around the streets of Hanmer is to hire one the 2-6 seater family bikes, allowing the family to enjoy the trip together, great for those with younger children who would have trouble coping on their own with traffic.
There are also traditional mountain bikes and helmets for hire if you feel like being a bit more adventurous. Take in some of the many mountain bike tracks on offer, winding through some of the most beautiful untouched bush you have ever seen. The tracks range in length and difficulty enabling you to choose something that suits your family abilities.

The Decadent Fudge Co. is located on Conical Hill Road and is bound to excite even the adults in the family. As the name suggests, they offer the most decadent range of boutique fudge, with everything from Crème Brulee, Passionfruit, Caramello, Lemon Meringe to Feijoa, Tiramisu and Pistachio fudge.
